Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Steve Sanders, and you’re listening to the Cityview Chiropractic podcast, coming to you from right here in Fort Worth. Today I want to talk about something that I think gets overlooked way too often, and that’s body awareness. Knowing how your body moves, recognizing when something feels off, and understanding why those movement patterns matter so much to your long-term health. Stick with me here, because this one is going to be really practical and useful for you.

So let me ask you something. Have you ever reached down to pick something up off the floor and felt a little twinge? Or maybe you’ve noticed that one shoulder always seems tighter than the other? Or you catch yourself slouching in your chair and you’re not even sure how long you’ve been sitting that way? That’s your body trying to communicate with you. And most of us, honestly, we’re just not listening.

Body awareness is basically your ability to sense what your body is doing in space. Where your joints are, how you’re holding your weight, whether your posture is balanced or lopsided. There’s actually a word for this sense. It’s called proprioception. And it’s one of the most important systems your nervous system runs. It’s always working in the background, giving your brain feedback about your position and movement. When that system is working well, you move efficiently. When it gets disrupted, from injury, from poor posture, from too much sitting, things start to break down.

Now here’s the thing about movement patterns. Your body is incredibly smart. When something hurts or feels uncomfortable, it will find a workaround. It’ll shift weight, compensate, recruit different muscles. And in the short term, that’s actually helpful. But when those compensations stick around, they become habits. And those habits can create wear and tear in places that were never meant to handle that kind of load.

A really common example I see in my practice all the time is people who have had ankle or knee issues and then start to develop hip or low back pain later. The body found a way to protect that original injury, but over time the altered movement pattern created a new problem. That’s why I always say, treat the whole person, not just the symptom.

So what can you do about this starting today? First, slow down and check in with your body. A few times a day, just pause. Notice how you’re sitting or standing. Are your shoulders creeping up toward your ears? Is your weight shifted to one side? These little check-ins build awareness over time.

Second, pay attention to how you move during everyday tasks. Bending down, lifting groceries, getting in and out of the car. These movements happen dozens of times a day and they add up. Try to keep your spine neutral when you lift, hinge from the hips, and avoid twisting and bending at the same time.

Third, move more throughout your day. I know you’ve heard this before, but it really matters. The human body was designed to move, not to stay in one position for hours on end. Even a few minutes of gentle movement every hour can make a real difference in how you feel.

Now, if you’ve been noticing discomfort that keeps coming back, or you feel like your posture has really gotten away from you, that’s a great time to come in and get evaluated. At Cityview Chiropractic, we look at the whole picture. Not just where you hurt, but how you’re moving, where the imbalances are, and what’s driving the problem. We want to help you feel better and move better for the long haul.

You deserve to feel good in your body. And a little bit of awareness goes a long way toward getting you there.
