Can Chiropractic Boost Your Immune System? Here’s What We Know

Episode Notes:

In this episode, Dr. Steve Sanders tackles one of the most frequently asked questions in his Fort Worth practice: can chiropractic care boost your immune system?

Rather than making exaggerated claims, Dr. Sanders dives into what the scientific research actually tells us about the connection between chiropractic adjustments and immune function. He separates evidence-based facts from common misconceptions.

If you’ve ever wondered about the relationship between spinal health and immunity, this episode provides honest, scientifically-grounded answers you can trust.

Hey there, and welcome back to the Cityview Chiropractic podcast. I’m Doctor Steve Sanders, and I’m so glad you’re here with me today.

You know, I get asked this question all the time in my Fort Worth office. People want to know if chiropractic care can actually boost their immune system. And honestly, it’s a great question. So let’s talk about what we really know and what the science tells us.

Now, here’s the thing. I’m not going to sit here and tell you that chiropractic adjustments cure diseases or prevent you from ever getting sick. That’s just not how it works, and anyone who tells you otherwise isn’t being straight with you. But what I can tell you is this. There’s a really fascinating connection between your nervous system, your spine, and how your body defends itself.

Think about it this way. Your nervous system is like the command center for your entire body. It controls everything. Your heart rate, your digestion, your breathing, and yes, your immune response. And your spine? It’s the main highway for all those nerve signals traveling between your brain and the rest of your body.

When your spine isn’t moving properly, when you’ve got areas that are restricted or misaligned, we call those subluxations. And those subluxations can create interference in how your nervous system communicates. It’s kind of like having static on a phone line. The message might still get through, but it’s not as clear or as efficient as it should be.

So what does that mean for your immune system? Well, when your nervous system is functioning at its best, your body has a better chance of coordinating all its defense mechanisms properly. Stress hormones can balance out better. Inflammation responses can be more appropriate. Your whole system just works more smoothly.

I’ve seen this play out countless times in my practice here at Cityview Chiropractic. Patients come in dealing with chronic stress, poor sleep, and they’re catching every cold that goes around. We start working on their spinal health, getting things moving better, and over time they notice they’re feeling more resilient. Now, is that just the adjustments? Probably not. It’s usually part of a bigger picture that includes better sleep, less pain, lower stress levels, and improved overall function.

Here’s what I want you to understand. Your immune system doesn’t work in isolation. It’s connected to everything else going on in your body. When you’re in chronic pain, when you’re stressed out, when you’re not sleeping well because your neck or back hurts, all of that takes a toll. Your body is spending energy managing pain and stress instead of keeping your defenses strong.

So what can you do about it? First, pay attention to your posture and movement throughout the day. If you’re sitting at a desk for hours, get up and move every thirty minutes. Stretch. Walk around. Give your spine a break.

Second, manage your stress. I know, easier said than done. But even simple things like deep breathing, going for a walk outside, or just stepping away from your screen for a few minutes can make a real difference.

And third, prioritize sleep. Your body does most of its repair work while you’re sleeping. If your mattress is fifteen years old or your pillows are flat, it might be time for an upgrade.

Now, if you’re dealing with ongoing pain, stiffness, or you just feel like your body isn’t functioning the way it should, that’s when it’s worth coming in for an evaluation. Let’s figure out what’s going on with your spine and nervous system. Let’s see if we can help your body work better so you can feel better.

At Cityview Chiropractic, we take the time to really understand what’s going on with you. We’re not just looking at symptoms. We’re looking at the whole picture of your health and how we can support your body’s natural ability to heal and defend itself.
