Chiropractic for Kids: Safe, Gentle, and So Beneficial

Episode Notes:

Dr. Steve Sanders from Cityview Chiropractic in Fort Worth discusses a topic that surprises many parents: chiropractic care for children. Many assume chiropractic is only for adults with back pain, but children have spines that experience stress and misalignment too.

In this episode, Dr. Sanders explains why pediatric chiropractic care is safe, gentle, and highly beneficial for growing bodies. Learn how chiropractic adjustments can support your child’s overall health and development.

Hey there, this is Doctor Steve Sanders from Cityview Chiropractic here in Fort Worth, and I’m so glad you tuned in today. I want to talk about something that surprises a lot of parents when they first hear about it… and that’s chiropractic care for kids.

Now, I know what you might be thinking. Kids? Chiropractic? Isn’t that just for adults with back pain? And I get it… that’s what most people assume. But here’s the thing. Kids have spines too. And those little spines go through a lot, even from day one.

Think about it. The birth process alone can be tough on a baby’s neck and spine. Then they’re learning to hold their head up, learning to roll over, sitting up, crawling, taking those first tumbles. And as they get older? Oh man… the backpacks, the sports, the hours hunched over tablets and phones. Their bodies are constantly growing and adapting, and sometimes things get a little out of alignment along the way.

So let me be really clear about what pediatric chiropractic actually looks like, because I think that’s where a lot of the confusion comes in. When I adjust a child, it is nothing like adjusting an adult. Nothing. The amount of pressure I use on an infant is about the same pressure you’d use to test the ripeness of a tomato. That’s it. Gentle, specific, and safe. For older kids, we adjust the techniques based on their age and size, but it’s always gentle and always appropriate for their developing bodies.

And why would a child even need chiropractic care? Well, let me tell you what I see in my practice every single week. Parents bring their kids in for all sorts of reasons. Some have trouble sleeping. Some get frequent ear infections. Some have colic that just won’t quit. Others have growing pains or complaints about their neck and back from sports. And you know what? A lot of times, when we address spinal alignment and nervous system function, those issues start to improve.

Now listen, I’m not saying chiropractic cures disease. That’s not what we do. But what we do is make sure the spine is moving properly and the nervous system can function without interference. And when a child’s body is working the way it should, it has an amazing ability to heal and regulate itself.

Here’s what I love most about working with kids. They respond so fast. Their bodies are resilient and adaptable. I’ve seen babies who were fussy and uncomfortable just relax and settle after a gentle adjustment. I’ve watched kids who struggled with focus and sitting still in school start to improve. I’ve helped young athletes recover from injuries and perform better. It’s honestly one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.

And parents always ask me… is it safe? Absolutely. Pediatric chiropractic has an excellent safety record. We use techniques specifically designed for children. We’re trained to work with growing bodies. And we always, always meet the child where they are. If they’re nervous, we go slow. We let them watch a parent get adjusted first. We make it fun and comfortable.

So what can you do as a parent? First, pay attention to how your child moves and feels. Do they favor one side? Do they complain about pain after sports or school? Do they seem uncomfortable or restless? These can all be signs that an evaluation might help. Second, if your child plays sports or carries a heavy backpack, consider getting their spine checked, even if they’re not in pain. Prevention is powerful. And third, ask questions. If you’re curious about whether chiropractic could help your child, just reach out. I’m happy to talk with you about your specific situation.

Bringing your child in doesn’t commit you to anything. We’ll do an age appropriate evaluation, answer all your questions, and help you make the best decision for your family.
