Hey there, and welcome back. This is Doctor Steve Sanders from Cityview Chiropractic here in Fort Worth. Thanks for tuning in today.
So, let’s talk about something really important. Pregnancy and chiropractic care. Now, if you’re expecting or you know someone who is, you’ve probably heard a million pieces of advice. But here’s one that doesn’t get talked about enough. Taking care of your spine and pelvis during pregnancy can make a huge difference in how you feel, and it can even affect how your delivery goes.
Let me explain why this matters so much.
Your body goes through incredible changes when you’re pregnant. I mean, think about it. You’re growing another human being. Your center of gravity shifts forward, your ligaments loosen up thanks to a hormone called relaxin, and your pelvis has to adapt to make room for that growing baby. All of that puts extra stress on your lower back, hips, and pelvis.
A lot of moms-to-be just assume back pain and discomfort are part of the deal. And sure, some discomfort is normal. But you don’t have to just suffer through it. That’s where chiropractic care comes in.
Here’s what’s interesting. When your pelvis is misaligned during pregnancy, it can actually reduce the amount of room available for your baby to develop and move into the right position for birth. We call this intrauterine constraint. Now, when the pelvis is balanced and moving properly, your baby has more room to get into that ideal head-down position.
So, gentle chiropractic adjustments during pregnancy help keep your pelvis aligned. This can reduce that lower back pain you might be dealing with. It can ease sciatic nerve pain that shoots down your leg. And it often helps with round ligament pain, which is that sharp, stabbing sensation some women feel in their belly or groin.
But beyond just comfort, and this is the really cool part, studies have shown that women who receive chiropractic care throughout pregnancy often report shorter labor times and less need for interventions. Now, I’m not saying chiropractic guarantees an easy delivery. Every birth is unique. But when your body is aligned and functioning well, it’s better prepared to do what it’s designed to do.
Let me be clear. Adjustments during pregnancy are very different from regular chiropractic care. We use special techniques and special tables designed specifically for pregnant women. Everything is gentle, safe, and adapted to what your body needs in that moment. You’re never lying flat on your stomach. We make sure you’re completely comfortable.
So what can you do right now if you’re pregnant or planning to be?
First, don’t wait until you’re in serious pain to get checked. Ideally, start chiropractic care early in your pregnancy. Prevention is so much easier than trying to fix a big problem later on.
Second, stay active. Gentle walking, prenatal yoga, swimming. These things help keep your body strong and flexible. Just listen to your body and don’t overdo it.
Third, pay attention to your posture. I know it’s tough when your belly is pulling you forward, but try to stand tall and avoid locking your knees. When you’re sitting, use a small pillow behind your lower back for support.
And please, avoid sleeping on your back after the first trimester. Sleep on your side, preferably your left side, with a pillow between your knees. This takes pressure off your pelvis and keeps your spine aligned while you rest.
Now, here’s when you should definitely come see us. If you’re experiencing regular back pain, if you’ve got sciatica or shooting leg pain, if your hips feel uneven or one side is higher than the other, or if you’re just feeling really uncomfortable and nothing seems to help. Don’t assume it’s something you just have to live with.
We also work with a lot of moms who’ve had previous difficult deliveries or C-sections and want to give their body the best chance for a smoother experience next time.
And by the way, chiropractic care doesn’t stop after delivery. Your body goes through a lot during birth, and postpartum care is just as important for your recovery.
So, here’s the bottom line. Pregnancy is a beautiful, challenging journey. You’re doing something amazing. But you don’t have to be uncomfortable the whole time. Chiropractic care can help you feel better, move better, and give your body the support it needs to do what it does best.
