Hey there, welcome back. I’m Doctor Steve Sanders, and you’re listening to the Cityview Chiropractic podcast, coming to you from right here in Fort Worth. Today we’re talking about something that affects just about everybody at some point in their lives. Back pain. And more specifically, how some really simple daily habits can help you avoid it in the first place.

Now here’s the thing. Most people think back pain just happens to them out of nowhere. They bend down to pick something up one morning and suddenly they can’t stand straight. And they think, wow, where did that come from? But here’s what I want you to understand. That moment was almost never the actual cause. It was just the last straw. The real issue usually builds up slowly over days, weeks, even months of small habits that put extra stress on your spine.

The good news is, that works both ways. Just like small bad habits can slowly create a problem, small good habits can slowly prevent one. So let’s talk about a few of the most important ones.

First, let’s talk about how you sit. Most of us are sitting for hours every single day. At a desk, in the car, on the couch. And when we sit, we tend to slouch forward, round our lower back, and let our head drift out in front of our shoulders. Over time, that position puts a lot of pressure on the discs in your lower spine and the muscles that support it. Here’s a simple fix. Every time you sit down, just take a second to sit back in your chair, let your feet rest flat on the floor, and try to keep your ears roughly over your shoulders. You don’t have to be perfect. Just more aware. Set a timer if you need to, and every thirty minutes or so, stand up, take a few steps, and reset your posture. That little break makes a bigger difference than most people realize.

Second, let’s talk about movement. Your spine loves movement. It actually needs it to stay healthy. The discs in your spine don’t have a direct blood supply the way your muscles do. They get their nutrition through movement and pressure changes. So when you stay still for long stretches, those discs start to get a little starved. Walking is one of the best things you can do for your back. Even just a ten or fifteen minute walk each day keeps things moving, helps your core muscles stay engaged, and reduces the kind of stiffness that builds up from sitting too long. You don’t need a gym membership or a special program. Just move a little more than you did yesterday.

Third, and this one surprises people, let’s talk about sleep position. A lot of back pain actually gets worse overnight. If you’re sleeping on your stomach, that tends to put your neck in a twisted position and flattens out the natural curve in your lower back. Sleeping on your side or on your back is generally much easier on your spine. If you’re a side sleeper, try putting a pillow between your knees. That helps keep your hips level and takes pressure off your lower back. Small adjustment, big difference.

Now here’s some practical advice you can start on today. When you get up in the morning, before you even check your phone, try spending just two or three minutes doing some gentle movement. A slow knee to chest stretch, a gentle seated forward bend, just something to wake your spine up before you start loading it. And throughout your day, just keep checking in with yourself. How am I sitting right now? Have I moved in the last half hour? Little reminders go a long way.

Now if you’re already dealing with back pain that isn’t going away, or if you keep having flare-ups no matter what you try, that’s a sign your spine needs a closer look. At Cityview Chiropractic, we take the time to actually figure out what’s going on with your particular spine, not just hand you a generic exercise sheet. Whether it’s a structural issue, muscle tension, or something affecting your posture, we want to help you get to the root of it.
