Is Your Desk Job Causing Neck and Shoulder Tension?

Episode Notes:

If you spend most of your workday at a desk, that nagging neck tension and shoulder tightness may not be something you just have to live with. Dr. Steve Sanders of Cityview Chiropractic in Fort Worth breaks down why desk jobs are one of the leading contributors to chronic neck and shoulder pain.

In this episode, Dr. Sanders explains the common postural habits and ergonomic mistakes that build up tension over time, and why simply pushing through the pain is not the answer.

Whether you are already dealing with discomfort or want to prevent it, this episode offers practical insight into what is really going on with your body and what you can do about it.

Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Steve Sanders with Cityview Chiropractic here in Fort Worth, and today I want to talk about something that I hear about almost every single day in my office. Neck tension. Shoulder tightness. That dull ache that just… won’t go away. And if you’re sitting at a desk for most of your workday, there’s a really good chance your job is a big part of what’s causing it.

Now, here’s the thing. Most people just push through it. They think it’s normal. They grab some ibuprofen, maybe stretch their neck a little, and they keep going. And I totally understand that. Life is busy. But what I want you to know today is that this kind of tension is not something you just have to live with. There are real reasons it’s happening, and there are real things you can do about it.

So let me break this down for you.

When you’re sitting at a desk, especially if you’re leaning forward toward a screen, your head starts to shift out in front of your shoulders. Now, your head weighs somewhere around ten to twelve pounds when it’s sitting right on top of your spine. But for every inch it drifts forward, the load on your neck muscles and joints increases dramatically. So by the time your head is just a couple of inches forward, your neck is working way harder than it should be, for hours at a time. That’s a recipe for tension, stiffness, and eventually pain.

Here’s what’s interesting. Your body is incredibly good at adapting. But when it adapts to a bad posture for long enough, those muscles just get locked in a shortened, tight state. The muscles in the front of your neck and chest get tight and pull your shoulders forward. The muscles in the back of your neck and upper back get overstretched and fatigued. And over time, that starts to affect the joints in your cervical spine, which is the neck region. That’s where we start to see real problems.

You know what I hear a lot? People tell me their shoulders just feel like they’re carrying the weight of the world. And honestly, from a mechanical standpoint, that’s almost literally what’s happening. Your postural muscles are fighting your posture all day long, and they’re exhausted.

Now, what can you do starting today? A few simple things can make a real difference. First, think about your monitor height. The top of your screen should be roughly at eye level so you’re not constantly looking down. Second, take breaks. Every thirty to forty-five minutes, get up, walk around, roll your shoulders back, and just reset. Third, try a simple chin tuck exercise. Gently pull your chin straight back, like you’re making a double chin, hold it for a few seconds, and release. That one move helps re-train your neck muscles to support your head properly. Do it a few times throughout the day.

These aren’t magic fixes. But they add up. Consistency is everything.

Now, here’s when I really want you to come see us. Those are signs that your spine and nervous system need some attention sooner rather than later.
